Indonesia is the largest archipelago in Southeast Asia which consists of 5 large islands: Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi and Papua; additionaly thousands of other small islands. There are 34 provinces consisting of diverse ethnic, cultural and linguistic groups.

The national language is Indonesian. Additionaly over 700 local dialecs and languages are spoken. The capital is Jakarta located on the island of Java. Jakarta is the center of government and also the center of business in Indonesia.
With over 267 million people, Indonesia is the 4th most populous country as well as the most populous Muslim-majority country. Java, the world’s most populous island, home to more than half of country’s population.
Indonesia is made up of over 400 Volcanoes, more than 140 are still active. there are many amazing non-active volcanoes to visit with amazing site seeing. While mega eruption are not common in modern times, Indonesia has seen some of the biggest in history including Krakatoa 1883 and Mt. Tambora 1815. (LiveScience.com, 2016)
The Indonesian currency is called Rupiah (Rp). The currency is a floating currency. This means it can have heavy fluctuates. The exchange rate against the US Dollar is about 14,000 Rp to 1 US dollar. However in 2020 it has been hover closer to 15,000 to 1. This can be every good for people using US Dollar.
The largest bill note in Rp is 100,000 which means a person can be carrying a stack of bills. Due to a shortage in circulating small bill notes, many places will not take big notes. Credit cards are common in many stores, but street food vendors are a cash only service.
Exchanging money is common in the cities. Just make sure you compare the rate they offer to the current exchange. Most exchange places will NOT take bills more than 10 years old. So if you have US money from early 2000's, they will not exchange it.
